As part of my never-ending series of entries dedicated to daydreams and swingeral ramblings, this week I explore the wonderful recurring dreams of being married to an Italian. I’m not Italian, nor do I currently have any crushes on any Italians in my life, but when I see somebody like Asia Argento go nuts in another B movie, my heart beats a little faster. I know that in real life my Italian wife would probably be nothing like feisty Ms Argento, but that’s what unattainable fantasies are all about. I know that people like Sophia Lauren aren’t likely to be found cruising the Italian dating scene, but a man can still dream (although it should be noted that Sophia is a tad past per prime, but you likely get the picture).

Certain singles that I know (and love) have these wild ideas of what constitutes a proper romantic life. A few years ago, this acquaintance of mine complained that men aren’t like the dude from The English Patient, that the romantic sparks that they were hoping for were simply nonexistent in the real world. Certain adult dating of mine also beleive that people from other, non-Anglo backgrounds were also more romantic and dreamy. One girl in particular met some Latin guy in Cuba, stayed with him for a grand total of ten days, and now wants to invite him up to Vancouver so that they can be together (she could have saved some time and energy and simply hit a Latin dating site, but that’s another topic). There seems to be this sense of “the grass is greener on the other side” when it comes to the dating scene - if you’re from some exotic country, that means that you MUST be more romantic than the local schmucks.

I have little experience when it comes to Asian dating. I will admit that I once had an affair with someone Asian, or more precisely really just a very brief fling, but it left me with indelible impression afterwards. In fact, once I realized that I had been unfaithful in the first place because my relationship at the time was completely unsatisfactory, I even tried to reconnect with that ship passing in the night.

Last year a show that would otherwise have been a blip on the cultural radar made a few headlines. The drama Big Love (starring Bill Paxton, with appearances by character heavyweights Bruce Dern and Harry Dean Stanton) was a show about Mormons, with a big emphasis on one of the more sensational aspect of certain renegade Mormons’ lives, namely polygamy (the Mormon Church officially banned the practice way back in 1890). The show caused a surprising uproar, and certain critics were not pleased with what they thought was a glowing recommendation of wife-swapping and open marriages. This leaves one wondering - is polygamy/open marriages still a forbidden topic? Does having an open marriage mean that you’re not capable of committing to a relationship?

Married life isn’t easy, especially when you’re not the one who’s married. Astute readers might think that I’m not making sense, and that I’m babbling incoherently again. But it’s true - when one is attracted to a swinger who’s spoken for, marriage is one heck of an impediment. The attraction of someone you think of as a hot wife might be based on the marriage itself - the temptations of forbidden fruit, etc etc. But it’s a much greater kick in the emotional teeth when you’re in love with someone for genuine reasons, only to have those emotions dismissed for whatever reason. You might be thinking that you should be Mr Right, but you would be wrong. It would be better to hit up one of the many sex dating sites, like Adult Friend Finder, than to walk this road. But of course you won’t.
